Run Britain Days 37-40: From near Falmouth to Lands End

I’m catching up on what has been a bit of a whirlwind few days.

I have felt all the emotions I think it’s possible to feel. I’ve been treated to some wonderful weather and scenery and I’ve been battered by some horrendous wind, rain and terrain.

Since running into Falmouth, my mission has been well and truly buoyed by the amazing Cornish trail running community. I’ve been accompanied for almost all of the muddy and exhausting miles over the last few days, which really has kept me going.

On day 38 (which was Monday, I think), I reached Lizard, the most southerly point on mainland Britain. I then turned north into the most ferocious headwind of the journey so far. I’m hoping this viscious northerly doesn’t last until John O Groats!

That evening was the first of Run Britain so far that I haven’t been able to enjoy an evening with my generous host. Rosie, who Harry and I stayed with for two nights, cooked me my dinner and brought it to me on a tray on the sofa. I could just about manage a ‘thank you’ before I fell asleep at 7.30.

The sun turned up again on Tuesday, for an amazing day of running into Penzance. Which was only ruined by something dodgy happening in my stomach. I’m not sure what the issue is, but I imagine it’s just a whole lot of complaining about all the running.

And then, to Lands End. Which is weirdly commercial amid the bleak and baron wilderness of the far west of Cornwall.

My time in Cornwall has been far and away the toughest and most magical part of Run Britain so far.  I’m learning a lot from being here and from spending time with some of the most generous and enthusiastic contributors to the mission. And it’s all been made possible thanks to Harry and Tallulah (our rental van, very kindly provided to us by another generous Cornishman, Barry).
