Run Britain Days 126: Fort William to Invergarry

There is a lovely bike path which runs from Oban all the way to Fort William. It’s called the Caledonian Way and I would highly recommend it.

At Fort William the non-motorised transport people though that perhaps it would be kind to keep the path going a bit longer, so you can follow it all the way up the waterway which connects Loch Linnhe and Loch Lochy (which is my favourite loch name so far) and then alongside Loch Lochy until you get to Invergarry. But that is where the pedestrianisation ends.

From Invergarry back to the actual sea at the Kyle of Lochalsh is 50 miles of brutal, exposed A-road. It would be horrible running conditions even in the best of weather, but in a very wet and windy February, it’s truly horrific.

It ended up taking me three days to reach the Kyle of Lochalsh. Not three full days of running, but three days of travel in total. It was soul destroying. I am so ready to see the back of this bit of Scotland.

What’s made it easier is that I have been joined by a lovely group of friends in the highlands. I am very grateful for their company through this slightly bleak patch.
