Run Britain Day 139: From Kylestrome to Kinlochbervie
On the road today, I passed a lady who had managed to reverse her car into a ditch. I watched her do it and could not understand how it had happened. She wasn’t even trying to reverse. But she had to clamber out of the ditch on the driver’s side, while her (incredibly understanding) husband climbed through the skyward-facing passenger door.
Two cars drove past the otherwise completely desolate road without stopping to help. I suppose they could have pretended not to notice, which was harder for me to do as I was on foot. I asked if there was anything I could do to help and the husband asked whether I had a tow truck available. Which was a hopeful request considering I was running along the road on my own.
About 10 miles later they drove past me, having been rescued from the ditch. It only strikes me now that it was quite strange that they didn’t ask me what I was doing - running along the road in my high-vis for most of the day. I suppose they had other things to worry about.
My day was a difficult one.
Sometimes I can forget that there is a world happening outside of Run Britain - one with unpaid Dartford Charge fines and frustrating legal settlements. But sometimes those external issues poke their heads into my challenge and add a weight that I can’t carry while I am running so far every day.
As always, in such times of crisis, I redistribute some of the load onto Nick. Whose simple advice for today was ‘at least you’re going to have a lot to write about in your book’. He’s right. I am looking forward to getting back to it once all this running is done.
