Run Britain Day 13: Herne Bay to Sandwich

Herne Bay is much nicer in the sunshine, but I suppose that is true of everywhere on the coast. I was buzzing by the time I came over the hill at Reculver Castle to meet Georgia and Freddie.

After nearly two weeks of uneven terrain and challenging running conditions, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to stride some miles along a perfectly flat promenade with the sun shining. Made all the better for the brilliant company of Georgia, who managed to push two year old Freddie in his buggy for almost an entire half marathon.

Up to Westgate, where I had spent the last two nights. It’s a lovely spot on the north coast of Kent with a great beach (which disappears when the tide is in), some nice restaurants and a phenomenal bakery.

I’ve also got positive reviews of Margate (from where you can take the train all the way into London) and Ramsgate (which still has its Victorian architecture).

The final push to Sandwich was tough, but made easier by meeting Yas. Another great friend from university, who managed her first miles since the birth of her daughter.

I’m really lucky to have a really close group of friends from uni. We’re all currently living our lives quite differently (which I think is what happens when you hit your 30s and some people start having children and others leave to run around the country), but they’re still the girls who I want to catch up with and chat to and update on my adventure. This week, despite seeing two out of the six of them, I left them a 15 minute voice note. And I think they all listened. You don’t get much better friends than that.
